General Mix: You Set My Sky Aflame

  • Aug. 25th, 2009 at 12:23 AM

Yes, fair citizens of livejournal, yet another songmix...like all of my songmix, I usually have a theme (yes, I am crazy that way). This sets of song I've chosen for their passionate music, yet simple but heartfelt lyrics. There is a song about hoping to find that someone who is out there, about toughing out the rough patches and grow stronger for it, for the simple "yes, this is one of those singular moments that I will cherish in all the days of my life", a song for that exact second that you realize that 'this is love. This, right here, with you. This is love", a song of "yes, I love you, dammit. Will you kiss me now?", and of course a song for letting go..

I do hope you love this mix as much as I do...I personally use when I write.

1
Antony and the Johnsons-Hope There is Someone

Hope there is someone to set my heart aflame
Comment: This song is pretty self explanatory. A song of yearning for someone to love.

2Jacob Golden-Hold Your Hair Back

And when my guard is down you’ll tear my ship apart
Comment: This song is about a kind of love that is not sweet, not simple, not easy but about the raggedy, grating side of love. But you stay true and stay together because, hey, who said love was easy?

3The Notwist-Consequence

You’re the color, you’re the movement and the spin
Comment: This song was featured in a lot of TV Shows and in the movie PUSH, it's about being in the moment, I guess. Everytime I hear this song and the above line, I keep picturing love as a kaleidoscope, beautiful, intricate, colorful...and damn dizzying!

4Paul McCartney-This Never Happened Before

I met you and now I'm sure this never happened before
Comment: This song was featured in the movie LAKEHOUSE featuring Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock on the scene where they danced when they met for the first time, LOVE that scene, with the camera panning slowly and with the line of warm colored street lights and the changed in their expressions as they got closer and closer...

5Copeland-The the Safest Ledge

Could you be happy to fall like a stone if you'd land right here safe in my arms?
Comment: This is a song of persuasion and questions like a conversation between two people. One is already in love while the other is still unsure.

6Ani Difranco-School Night

The fact that I adore you is but one of my truths
Comment: This song is one of my ULTIMATE favorites. It's about choosing between two loves and the analogy Ani Difranco uses in her lyrics are gorgeous ("he said, did you come here to tell me goodbye?
so she built a skyscraper of procrastination and then she leaned out the twenty-fifth floor window
) and DAMN, the lyrics even RHYME!!! Not to mention her voice and the sultry music...powerful this song.

7Cary Brothers-Something

This something you will not shake
Comment: At first I was, 'who?' but then I got a glimpse of this song as I watched an episode of SMALLVILLE. I guess, it's about a relationship needing two people to keep it alive...personally I love the music and the lyrics...

8Daughtry-Life After You

All that I’m after is a life full of laughter as long as I’m laughing with you
Comment: I have a soft spot for Daughtry, I just like his music, I like all his songs in his new album. This one is about fighting, walking out and smacking yourself up the head for your own stupidity.

9The Fray-Say When

Say when and my own two hands will comfort you tonight
Comment: This songs is very good for my writing, the images the lyrics create are awesome!! There is an urgency to the music, to the lyrics and the voice of the singer...and every time I let my mind play with this song, I get a sense of strength from it..

10Josh Kelly-Walk Right In

Two hearts plotting out the course
Comment: Hesitancy, when two people are standing between 'will we?' 'Should we?'. Love the music and the singer's voice. I'm a sucker for an acoustic guitar.

11Michelle Featherstone-Stay

If I promise not to fight at least not tonight, will you stay the night?
Comment: The first time I heard this song was on an episode of J.J ABRAM's ALIAS. It's a really, soft, haunting song about doubts and fears and abandonment...achingly beautiful in the slit-my-wrists category.

12The New Monarchs-Kiss Me at the Gate

So I have made a choice to stand right here and watch you go
Comment: A song about letting go...this song brings the image of iron black gates and stormy gray clouds...very moody, very atmospheric.
